The Alexander Technique - Die Alexander Technik

Voice Lessons

The Swedish-Italian Technique

The Swedish-Italian Technique helps singers develop their own unique voices and offers the critical tools needed for singers of all levels to be able to express themselves more beautifully and creatively through song.  Given by an expert teacher with over 14 years of teaching experience, as well as a wide range of performance experience in opera and concert, the private lessons are tailored to each singer's unique needs.  Using exercises originated and implemented by revered pedagogues like Manuel Garcia, Dr. Gillis Brat, Alan Lindquest and William Vennard, the lessons encourage both healthy vocal functioning and development and provide the singer with a safe, supportive place to explore his or her own vocal possibilities.

The one-hour lessons consist of two parts - 30 minutes of customized vocal exercises which effectively address any existing vocal issues and train the voice to work at its optimum level and then 30 minutes of applying the technical principles learned in the vocal exercises to song repertoire.  In addition, the lessons include a focus on how the body is being used while singing, so that excess tension affecting vocal quality can be released.

The voice lessons focus on developing the following:

  • Healthy functioning of the voice, including vocal cord closure
  • Breathing and support for singing
  • Good use of the body
  • An open pharyngeal space (throat)
  • A free jaw and tongue
  • Open frontal and back resonance spaces
  • Musicianship skills and performance techniques
  • Language skills in German, French, Italian and English

Lessons are open to beginning, intermediate and advanced students of singing.

The Swedish-Italian Technique provides the best of both worlds - the easy, forward, resonant production of the world-renowned Italian Technique and the rounded, open warmth of tone from the Swedish embouchure.  Two proponents of Swedish-Italian Technique were world-class opera singers, Kirsten Flagstad and Jussi Bjoerling, both of whom were known for their effortless-sounding vocal production.

The Swedish-Italian Technique is also taught by Maestro David Jones, a master voice teacher and Ms. Briceland's personal teacher.  More specifics about the technique and its benefits can be found at his website at
